"Serving Those Who are Serving Us"

We are "The Troop Group". We are a composite of representatives from American Legion Auxiliary Hammond-Schmit Unit 55 in Hortonville, WI; Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church Troop Support Ministry Team working with three seperate entities from Greenville, WI; and Appleton Military Support Group in Appleton, WI. Our mission is to insure as many service members as possible in harm's way have as much support as we can provide them as often as they need it to the best of our ability.

Our group began in January 2005 with the first deployment of Ed and Donna Nickel's son, Joe. Donna had promised Joe she wouldn't cry and get depressed but found herself doing both. She and Joe's grandmother started working with his unit's FRG representative to offer support to the men and women in Joe's unit. Donna was leading or working with three seperate support programs when it became apparent more could be done by finding ways to combine the efforts of the three groups into one bigger, better organized effort and recruit more volunteers. The Troop Group was formed.

The efforts of all involved are offered as labors of love. Our director volunteers as little as 10 to as many as 50 hours a week on our mission. She and her husband have donated half their basement to the cause. Our supplies and funding is primarily donated. We spend approximately $16,000 in cash and send over $20,000 in supplies to over 6,000 troops each year. We have great community support for which we are very grateful.
